Fire Safety & Evacuation
What to do in an emergency and how your building’s fire strategy works.
Fire Risk Assessment (FRA)
An independent Fire Risk Assessment is carried out annually. The latest assessment identified several open actions being completed in order of priority, including:
Carry out repairs / adjustment of self-closing devices to ensure the identified fire doors are fully self-closing into the frames
Ensure all appropriate warning signage is in place on the communal cupboards
Ensure communal / landlord's supply is tested within recommended testing frequencies
Ensure contractors carry out repairs to the fire stopping in the floors following the installation of heavy-duty cables
You can request a full copy of the latest FRA by contacting our Building Safety Team.
Evacuation Procedure
Azores House operates a Stay Put evacuation strategy. If there is a fire elsewhere in the building, stay in your flat unless told otherwise by the Fire Brigade.
If the fire is inside your flat or you hear an alarm:
Get everyone out immediately.
Stay low if there’s smoke.
Close all doors behind you.
Call 999 and report the fire.
Do not use lifts.
Do not re-enter until told it’s safe.
If your escape route is blocked, stay in a safe room with a window, block gaps with towels, and call 999.
Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP)
If you or anyone in your household needs help to evacuate during a fire, please contact:
Local Housing Manager: Sharon Flavien (020 3535 3535)
They will arrange a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) for you.
Planning Your Escape Route
The escape route from your flat is via the single staircase, which leads directly to two final exits on the ground floor. Aim to get to a stairway as quickly as you can, as it will have fire doors and will usually be enclosed and ventilated.
It’s important that everyone in your household knows the escape route, and that you practise it so that you all feel confident about what to do if a fire breaks out in your home or if you hear an alarm. A torch is useful in case you need to evacuate at night.
Practise your escape route regularly.
Keep routes clear of clutter and trip hazards.
Keep keys near exit doors.
A torch is useful for night-time evacuation.
Report any blocked routes or hazards immediately.
